MPS to discuss smaller bond issue with community

McALESTER — McAlester Public Schools Superintendent Marsha Gore announced that MPS will host a meeting Monday at 6 p.m. at the Old McAlester High School in the cafeteria.

Gore said that since the April 1 bond election was defeated, she has been approached by “people from all walks of life” to attempt another bond election.

These people have suggested a smaller bond election and that it should be done soon, she said.

“Please share this with anyone you wish as we really would like to have people who care about MPS attend and share their ideas,” Gore said.

She said the schools have decided to remove an early childhood center from their discussions.

She said taking an early childhood center out of the discussions leaves MPS with the following priorities: technology, security cameras, transportation; heating, ventilation and air conditioning, and portable classroom buildings for early childhood students.

She said the next election date available for a school bond election is Aug. 26. The MPS board of education must approve a resolution by June 11, so she said she is urging the public to attend to have their voice heard.

“We have preliminary costs for all of these and have identified how much it would cost to pass a bond and keep the indebtedness under 10 percent,” Gore said, “paying it off in five years.”

She said 9,672 people were registered to vote in McAlester Public Schools District and exactly 8,000 people did not vote in the last school bond election.

Gore said because of this, 17 percent of registered voters are deciding the future of McAlester Pubic Schools.

Gore said MPS will also place a survey at mcalester.k12.ok.us.
