Buffs Bucks help Emerson students buy gifts

McALESTER — Some students at Emerson Elementary School were Christmas shopping on Tuesday at the school’s Buff Store.

Instead of using cash, the children used Buff Bucks they earned for doing good deeds, according to Sandra York school volunteer.

“If we catch one of the students doing a good deed, being kind or just showing good behavior we give them a Buffs Buck,” York said.

“They can earn the bucks many different ways; It’s all about making good choices.”

She said the program runs all year but during Christmas time free gift wrapping is provided for the students.

During the year the store opens each month and the students can purchase toys and other items that are often donated by the community, she said.

“We always accept donations,” York said.

She said the volunteers and teachers who run the program try to accommodate their young shoppers.

“We try to listen to what the students want,” York said.

We had a little boy who wanted to buy something for his dog. So we went out and got little dog treats and dog toys for him.”
