Classes set at Eastern for Parker Intermediate School students in McAlester

McALESTER — McAlester Public Schools officials decided Tuesday afternoon that fifth and sixth grade Parker Intermediate School students will attend classes at the McAlester Campus of Eastern Oklahoma State College, at 1802 E. College Ave., beginning Wednesday and continuing at least for the rest of this week.

“We have structural damage and at this time we’re not able to use Parker,” said MPS Superintendent Marsha Gore.

However, “We’re going to have school, as usual,” Gore said

Students who ordinarily ride buses to Parker should go ahead and catch their buses each morning at the normal time, Gore said. Buses will transport those students to the Eastern Campus.

Parents who ordinarily drive their children to Parker should now drive them to Eastern’s McAlester Campus and drop them off at the breezeway between the two buildings at the campus, Gore said.

Classes are set to begin at 8 a.m. and to be dismissed at 3 p.m., she said.

Steps have been made to provide breakfast and lunch to the students at the Eastern Campus, she said.

Teachers and other school personnel will be at the breezeway to help guide the students and the school expects security to be on hand to help with traffic control.

Plans called for the Parker building to be inspected Wednesday by a structural engineer.

In the meantime, Gore urged everyone to be patient while dropping off, and picking up, the students at Eastern.

McAlester Public Schools Board of Education President, Dr. Janet Wansick and EOSC President Dr. Steve Smith helped make arrangements for the Parker students to attend Eastern.

Gore said school officials will be putting together some longer-range plans later this week related to the situation at Parker.

Meanwhile, Gore called an emergency meeting of Parker instructors, support staff and administrators, set for 6 p.m. Wednesday in the MPS central office.
