Oklahoma Youth Expo steer, lamb and goat nomination
By Greg Owen
OSU Extension Educator
Household/Family nominations: In order to properly household or family nominate an animal, you must list all possible exhibitors’ names on the nomination envelope.
Only one envelope per animal is required; however, all exhibitors’ names must be on the envelope in the spaces provided.
The animal will not be household/family nominated if we do not have each exhibitor’s name on the envelope.
See rule number three of the OYE General Rules for further information on household nominations.
The steer nominations for the Oklahoma Youth EXPO will be due by Oct. 22.
The lamb and goat nominations will be at the Muskogee County Fairgrounds from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Oct. 30. The cost is $10 per head.
Nomination kits can only be ordered by agricultural education instructors and county extension educators. Individual families or exhibitors may not request kits. You must go through your agriculture teacher or county extension educator.
Steers and Swine:
Step 1: Print off a nomination request form for each species desired (steers or swine), complete the form, and mail or fax to the OYE office.
Nomination kit request: You must send in this request form for each species to the Oklahoma Youth Expo office in order to receive nomination kits for that species.
Remember to make your requests for kits early enough to meet the nomination deadlines noted at the bottom.
Before You Begin Nomination Requirements: When pulling hair for DNA samples take care to obtain hair roots. This is very important. Pull hair from the following points:
Steers: Switch of tail
Swine: Tail, legs, or back of neck
Step 2: After receiving your nomination kits, complete the nomination card/envelope and perform the requirements for each species listed below. NOTE: You will need one envelope per animal.
Requirements
In order to properly nominate an animal for the 2008 OYE, the following is required:
Steers: hair DNA sample, photo (head & profile shot with exhibitor in the photo), nose print, nomination envelope, and $10 per head (Note: Nose prints should be taken on white index cards. Wipe the steer’s nose dry before taking the print so it will be clear and free of smudges. Do not bend card in half to mail in. You must have ink to make the nose print.)
Swine: hair DNA sample, ear notch, nomination envelope, and $10 per head.
Step 3: Next, place the hair sample inside the plastic bag which is provided for you, seal the bag shut, and write the animal’s OYE tage number on the outside of the bag while making sure the ink will not rub off.
Place the bag with the hair (DNA) sample inside of the nomination envelope and seal it as well. All other information, (i.e. breeders verification form, nose print, and photo for steers) should be stapled to the back of the nomination envelope.
Step 4: Last, mail or deliver the entire packet to the OYE office on or before the deadline date. Do not attempt to mail the nomination envelope itself. You must place all nomination envelopes inside of a mailing envelope prior to mailing.
Payment: Payment should accompany all completed nominations. Do not place payment inside of individual nomination envelopes.
2008 OYE Tags: All 2008 OYE tags must be placed in the right ear of each animal. Mail all steer and swine nominations to: Oklahoma Youth Expo, 816 N. Broadway Ave., Oklahoma City, OK 73102.
Deadline:
All nominations must be postmarked by their deadline date in order to be accepted. Steers: Oct. 22 and swine: Dec. 10.
