Tanya Steidley, of McAlester, is one of 115 freshman students selected to receive a $1,500 President’s Leadership Council Scholarship at Oklahoma State University this fall.

The special freshman scholarship is based on academic achievement, leadership potential and school and community service.

Steidley is the daughter of James and Connie Steidley, of McAlester. She is a 2007 graduate of McAlester High School and plans to major in agribusiness.

Simonton awards Russell scholarship

McAlester resident Stevie Russell is one of 11 students from across the country to receive a scholarship form the Simonton Windows Scholarship Fund for the 2007-2008 school year.

Russell plans to start school at the University of Oklahoma this fall, where she will major in business management.

The Simonton Windows Scholarships are renewable for the period need to complete an undergraduate degree, as long as recipients maintain at least a 2.5 grade point average.

An independent advisory committee of five community leaders from Wood County, W. Va., selected the scholarship recipients based on academic achievement and leadership abilities and activities.

The Carl Albert State College Development Foundation has awarded the Roy and Jeanne Reed Business Scholarship to Jacob Walter Lynn Mason. He is the son of Dennis and Patty Mason and a graduate of Crowder High School. He plans to major in Business. He is a member of Baseball, Crowder Skeet and Trap Shooting Sports, Archery Club, 4-H, Key Club, FFA, and Junior Firefighters.

Quinton schools get good review for special services

During the summer months Oklahoma schools were notified that the performance of their special services programs would be evaluated against 14 monitoring areas. These would include categories such as child find procedures, preschool outcomes, student transition procedures, and 11 other areas required by the U. S. Department of Education and the State Department of Education.

Quinton Superintendent Sherri Prentice received notification that Quinton Schools received a “Meets Requirements” grade — the highest available.

“This tells us that we are meeting or exceeding all the requirements of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act Part B.

“That’s pretty hard to do from year to year because the federal laws change so much.,” Prentice said.
