Volunteer picnic and planning meeting set

By Katie Grant
Special to the News-Capital

The second annual volunteer picnic and planning meeting will be held Aug. 11 at 9 a.m. at the Frink-Chambers Community Center. It is located straight across from the school and next to the walking track and softball field.

We need everyone to bring their school calendars so we can plan events for the upcoming year. If you are not able to come, we ask that you send a representative from your club so that we can schedule events without conflict.

The clubs that attend these meetings usually have higher participation in the contests because they know beforehand when the deadlines are for entering the contests. We will be setting locations and dates for the following events: Junior and Senior Share the Fun, Cloverbud Share the Fun, Fall Food Festival, bread baking contest, craft contest, photography contest, speech contest, job readiness, fashion revue, impressive dress, Clover Bowl, essay contest, Animal Science Skill-a-Thon, living diorama contest, county officer elections, District Leadership Lock-in, District Share the Fun, district livestock show, district horse judging contest, district Omniplex Lock-in, Junior Livestock Show, state ambassadors due, state record books due, district speech contest.

Also, district archery and rifle contest, district trap and skeet contest, 87th 4-H Roundup, district horse show, Multi-County Summer Camp, county record books due, district volunteer conference, Jr. ambassadors interview, National 4-H Month radio PSA and the district Animal Science Skill-a-Thon.

Also at this meeting we will be discussing some other items:

1) Pittsburg County Free Fair and deadlines associated with the event.

2) Southeast District 4-H Events and Activities Calendar

3) New 4-H Resource CD for volunteers and members (no this is not a CD with music)

4) Planing of the the 4-H awards banquet, which has been scheduled for Oct. 13 at the Southeast Expo Center. Please come with ideas for themes.

5) state 4-H Roundup changes for 2008

6)4-H enrollment system

As you all know, 4-H keeps everyone busy all year round. It is because of all the hard work and dedication given from all of you that we believe we have the best 4-H program in the state of Oklahoma.

The 4-H Day at a Cowboy Football Game is scheduled for Sept. 8. Our group rate is $35 per person and it includes a soft drink and a water station for 4-H guests. For $35 you will receive: a ticket to the OSU vs. Florida Atlantic football game, and a pre-game gathering for 4-H members, alumni, and 4-H families on the lawn north of the state 4-H Office. Details:

• The kick-off time is subject to change, but currently is set for 6:05 p.m.

•All tickets have to be picked up at the state 4-H office, (on the corner of Monroe and Hall of Fame between 3:30 and 5 p.m.)

• Please include an email address on your order form so we can verify your order, notify you of the game time and tailgate details, and notify you of future special 4-H promotions at OSU athletic events.

•Everyone who submits orders will be contacted with an e-mail. If you do not get an e-mail, you will know we do not have your order. (If you do not have e-mail, please list a phone number for confirmation of your order.)

• Orders will be grouped by order form and will not be split up on game day. The person who picks up the tickets will do so for entire group.

• Parking is limited and no special 4-H game day parking will be provided.

•Season ticket holders wishing to purchase a shirt may do so by using the same form.

•T-shirts are not part of the $35 package. Youth sizes will cost $11, adult small to adult X-Large will cost $13, and adult XX-Large to adult XXX- Large will cost $15.

T-Shirts will be grouped based upon contact name/club, not total county.

• Final and additional information will be sent to the e-mail address provided and posted on the Oklahoma 4-H Web page.

Credit card orders can be taken by fax at 405-744-6522 or by phone, 405-744-8885 for an additional $3 fee per order form. Four hundred tickets have been reserved and will be issued on a first come, first serve basis.

Of the $35 fee, $1 will be distributed: back to each of the county 4-H programs that have attendees; the collegiate 4-H scholarship fund; OAE4-HA, and the Oklahoma 4-H Foundation to help defray the cost of organizing this event.

State officer applications will be due Sept. 1. There is a 300 point minimum required to apply for a state office and you must be 14 by January of 2008.

District officer applications will be due mid- to late September. There is a 200 point minimum required and you also must be 14 by January of 2008. You can pick up both of these applications at the 4-H Extension office from Greg Owen or Mike Carter.
