Kiowa man charged with assault by stangulation

McALESTER — A Kiowa man was charged Tuesday with domestic assault and battery by strangulation, a felony, and misdemeanor counts of domestic assault and battery in the presence of a minor and threatening to perform an act of violence.

Clifton Peterson, 42, was arrested Monday night after Officer Jack Suter of the Krebs Police Department was dispatched to the police department to respond to a report of a man and woman in an altercation outside.

According to a court affidavit written by Suter, Peterson started walking away from the woman after seeing Suter’s patrol unit. Once caught up to, Peterson allegedly told the officer that he was trying to get his wife to come home.

The woman allegedly told Suter that Peterson had earlier grabbed her by the throat with his hands and started choking her. She allegedly said that she was able to escape her bedroom before she was pushed down and her alleged assailant put his arms around her neck in the living room.

According to Suter, there was strong reason to believe that minors were present during the alleged crime.

Allegedly, after the woman was able to escape the residence, Peterson allegedly threatened to kill both her and her daughter who lives in a different community.  

On Tuesday, Peterson appeared in front of Special District Judge Tim Mills and revealed that he was on medication and said that he did not remember what had allegedly happened. Upon being told his rights, he at first said he did not understand them. Eventually, he said he did understand.    

Mills set Peterson’s bond at $7,500 and his next court date will be June 20, when a preliminary hearing conference is scheduled.

If convicted of the three counts, Peterson could face up to four-and-a-half years in prison and an $8,000 fine.
