Elderly man pleads guilty for beating cat nearly to death

McALESTER — An elderly McAlester man arrested after allegedly beating a cat nearly to death with a hammer has pleaded guilty in the case for a $10 fine.

Everett Baskin, 86, told police he had shot more than 84 cats, skunks and raccoons before a neighbor saw him throw a cat in a Dumpster last weekend.

The neighbor said she had been sitting on her porch when she heard a cat and noises and then saw Baskin take a plastic bag to a trash bin, according to an affidavit filed in the case. She looked in the bin and in the bag and found a black cat before calling police.

Police found the cat bleeding and nearly dead — it was later “put down” by an officer, the affidavit states — and talked to Baskin. He allegedly told police he would no longer kill cats apparently caught in a city-owned animal trap and would instead called the city’s animal control office for disposal of the animals, the affidavit states.

Baskin was charged Monday with felony cruelty to animals, but he pleaded guilty on Tuesday to a reduced charge of misdemeanor acts resulting in gross injury. Judgment and sentencing were deferred for three months and he was fined $10 in the plea bargain agreement.

A phone number could not be found for Baskin and his attorney did not immediately return a phone call seeking comment.
