DETECTIVE’S DISPATCH

Tip of the week: Dogs must either be on a leash or in a fenced yard. If you allow your dog to run loose, and are caught, you will be issued a citation for Animal at Large. Citation for First offense is $174, second offense is $324 and third offense is $574.

Special correspondent

The McAlester Police Department would like to make the citizens of McAlester and Pittsburg County aware of The Oklahoma Computer Crimes Act. It is against the law to use a computer to annoy, abuse, threaten or harass another person. If you are convicted of doing this, you may be punished up to $5,000 in fines and/or 30 days in the county jail. This also includes smart phones.

Having this in mind, be very cautious of what you post on social media or other Internet sites. This would include pictures, threats or any untrue slanderous statements that you post about someone. We often see this happen when someone is angry at another person, whether it is an ex-spouse, boyfriend or girlfriend or somebody that has just made you mad. People often do this when they are angry and then regret it later and delete it.

Next time you get upset with somebody and think about posting something negative about them, think about the consequences and remember that you could be arrested for it. Many times when we take these kinds of calls, we recommend getting a protective order against the person harassing you.

In addition to criminal charges, you could also be sued civilly. This would then cost you legal fees for an attorney, court costs and the award issued by the judge if you lose, not to mention the time you would have to take out of your day or away from work so you could be at court.

Today’s technology makes it very convenient for us to access the Internet for work or in our personal lives. Let’s use this in a positive way and not in a way that could land you in jail.

To schedule a Neighborhood Watch Program, fraud or scam program or any other safety program, contact officer Jeremy Busby at 918-423-9657 or email him at jeremy.busby@cityofmcalester.com. The programs are free of charge.

If you have any information on a crime, contact the McAlester Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Division at 918-421-4917 or email me at chris.morris@cityofmcalester.com. You may remain anonymous. To report any other criminal activity, contact the McAlester Police Department at 918-423-1212, or dial 911 if it is an emergency.

Have a great week and don’t forget to buckle up!
