McAlester trooper saluted

McALESTER — Trooper Sean Mass of the Oklahoma Highway Patrol’s Troop D, McAlester, has been recognized as a Trooper of the Year by AAA Oklahoma.

Mass was recognized for an act of humanitarianism last August near State Highway 31 and Gaines Creek Road in Pittsburg County, according to a press release from AAA. Upon responding to a report of a vehicle in the water, the officer found a vehicle nearly submerged and sinking fast about 75 feet off shore. Mass and a passerby entered the water and made their way to the vehicle and its driver.

After some conversation, the trooper was able to help the driver out of the vehicle and back to safety, according to the press release.

“Trooper Mass displayed great courage and professionalism in saving the life of another,”  said OHP Capt. George Brown during the awards presentation, held last month.

Others named as Trooper of the Year by AAA were troopers Bobby Raines, of Troop B in Tulsa, and Tommy Allen, of Troop E in Durant.

“It is a privilege to be able to recognize these OHP troopers and (Department of Public Safety) staffers,” said Chuck Mai, spokesman for AAA Oklahoma. “Most Oklahomans are unaware of the unusually high caliber of employees we have in these agencies. They work tirelessly and often at great risk, both on the scene and behind the scenes, to protect the citizens of Oklahoma. AAA just wants to say, ‘Thanks.’”
