McALESTER — A 2-month-old child is currently in critical condition and two people have been arrested in connection to the child’s injuries.

“Even if the child survives,” said Pittsburg County Sheriff Joel Kerns, “she will have permanent medical problems related to the injuries sustained under the care of the man and woman who have been arrested in the case.”

The identity of the man and woman arrested in the case is being withheld until charges are filed in Pittsburg County District Court. Meanwhile, both were arrested May 6 and are being held at the Pittsburg County jail in lieu of $250,000 bonds.

Kerns said his office has requested the assistance of the Oklahoma Bureau of Investigation. He said the man arrested in the case is suspected of child abuse and the woman is suspected of enabling child abuse.

When asked about the nature of the baby’s injuries, Kerns said, “Head and trunk blunt force trauma.” Kerns also said the baby has multiple broken bones in various stages of healing.

The baby is in critical condition, Kerns said. “We’ve been in contact with the doctor daily and (the doctor) still isn’t sure if the child will survive.”
