McAlester man beaten, robbed after winning at casino

McALESTER — A 69- year-old McAlester man remained hospitalized today after he was beaten and robbed of his casino winnings early Sunday morning, police said.

Phillip Ira Stephens had surgery Sunday following an attack and robbery outside his McAlester home, according to McAlester Police Det. Sgt. Chris Morris. Stephens suffered injuries to his head and face, as well as a broken femur, Morris said Monday.

More than $10,000 was taken during the robbery, according to police.

Morris said Stephens had been playing at the Choctaw Casino in McAlester prior to the attack and robbery, which occurred between 7:08 and 7:17 a.m.

“He’d been playing at the casino all night,” Morris said. While at the casino, “These two people came up and talked to him,” said Morris.

After playing all night at the casino, Stephens headed home early Sunday morning, according to Morris. After Stephens arrived home and got out of his truck, a man and a woman who had followed him from the casino approached him and told him to give them all his money, said Morris.

When Stephens didn’t hand over the money, he was attacked, according to Morris. During the attack, the woman got her hands on the money and ran and got into a car, he said.

By that time the commotion drew the attention of a neighbor.

“A neighbor saw the man punching him in the face,” Morris said. “She hollered at him to stop” and the man ran into a car and the couple sped away, the officer said.

Neighbors called police and an ambulance, according to Morris.

Police have two individuals they are trying to locate as persons of interest in the case. They were the same two individuals who were observed speaking with Stephens at the casino, Morris said.

Police are filing reports with District 18 District Attorney Farley Ward’s office and have requested arrest warrants, according to Morris.
