Commissioners approve city and county jail services agreement

McALESTER — Pittsburg County Commissioners approved a new city and county jail services agreement and ordered the incorporation of a new town on Monday.

Commissioners for District 1 Gene Rogers and District 2 Kevin Smith met Monday for a regular meeting at the Pittsburg County Courthouse.

The jail services agreement has been pending for months awaiting a decision by the Oklahoma Attorney General.

Now, with the AG’s approval, the new agreement which was  unanimously approved by the commissioners will go before the McAlester City Council for final approval.

The agreement is not on this week’s council agenda.

Once it’s approved by the council, the city will have the ability to arrest and jail those who have municipal warrants for unpaid fines, something the city hasn’t been able to do for months, according to McAlester Police Chief Gary Wansick.

He said the city’s three holding areas have been unusable since June because of plumbing problems and lack of air-conditioning.

Meanwhile Wansick said with the new jail agreement, arrests on municipal warrants are expected to increase.

“I foresee quite a number of people coming into the jail,”

The new agreement states the city of McAlester will pay $44 per day for city inmates who will be housed at the Pittsburg County Criminal Justice center also know as the Pittsburg County jail.

The $44 per- day rate the city will pay is the same as what the state pays for Oklahoma Department of Corrections inmates held at the jail, according to Pittsburg County Sheriff Joel Kerns.

Also during Monday’s meeting the commissioners signed a resolution to order the incorporation of the town of Carlton Landing making it the first incorporation  for the state of Oklahoma in decades, according to Grant Humphries developer of the new town.

The resolution comes after voters approved the incorporation during a Pittsburg County special election held Oct. 8.

In another agenda item, the commissioners approved a subdivision plat called The Meadows on Longtown Creek presented by Jim Rowe of Longtown.

The plat is set for the development of approximately 9 lots in Longtown, according to Commissioner Smith.

Pittsburg County commissioners meet Mondays at 9 a.m. in the commissioner’s conference room at the Pittsburg County Courthouse.

The meetings are open to the public.
