McAlester man accused of raping woman

McALESTER — A McAlester man is accused of overpowering and raping a woman, court records allege.

Travis Lynn Mayo, 27, was charged April 9 in Pittsburg County District Court with one felony count of first degree rape.

According to court records, the woman told police that on Nov. 14 she had invited Mayo, “whom she thought was a friend,” into her home. Mayo allegedly “forced her into her bedroom where he barricaded the door to keep her son from entering and then forced” himself on her, a police affidavit states. The woman told police she told Mayo “no” several times “but that he held her down and covered her mouth where she could not yell for help,” the affidavit alleges.

Pittsburg County Deputy Tommy Lyons said he turned in his report about the alleged rape to the District 18 District Attorney’s Office on Nov. 22, 2010. After leaving multiple messages, the News-Capital was unable to get in contact with District 18 District Attorney Farley Ward by presstime Thursday to ask why Mayo, who allegedly raped the woman in 2010, is just now being charged.

A $50,000 warrant has been issued for Mayo’s arrest. If convicted, he is facing between one and 15 years imprisonment.

A phone message seeking comment was not returned by Mayo by presstime Thursday.
