Man allegedly steals truck, cash from grandmother

McALESTER — A previously convicted felon who allegedly took his grandmother’s truck and $60 from her purse has been charged with another felony and a misdemeanor.

Joseph Bascom, 29, allegedly took the truck back to his grandmother’s house the same day it was reported stolen, and reports state that he told police upon his arrest that he took it to go to the dollar store and pawn shop and the money for cigarettes and beer.

Bascom is alleged to have fled upon learning that law enforcement was coming to arrest him, but he was caught quickly, according to a police affidavit.

The incident allegedly occurred on Saturday and he was charged with larceny of automobile, a felony, and petit larceny, a misdemeanor, on Monday.   

In 2005, Bascom was convicted of several felonies including attempted kidnapping, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, and larceny of an automobile. according to court documents.

Bascom’s bond was set at $8,000 and he will have a preliminary hearing conference on June 27 according to a court document. He pleaded not guilty, according to the same document.

Bascom could potentially serve 20 years and 60 days in prison if convicted of the most recent charge.
