Lyles out as McAlester police chief

McALESTER — The  McAlester Police Department is down by another officer — Police Chief Jim Lyles.

McAlester City Manager Pete Stasiak confirmed the matter.

“His employment is no longer with us,” Stasiak said of Lyles. Stasiak would not say if Lyles was terminated. However, Stasiak did acknowledge that he personally informed Lyles that Lyles was no longer an employee of the McAlester Police Department.

When asked why Lyles was no longer employed as police chief, Stasiak said “No comment.”

Stasiak said Lyles was informed of the matter today at City Hall.

Administrative duties at the McAlester Police Department are now being handled by Darryl Miller, Stasiak said.

Miller’s previous title prior to the city budget for the 2013-2014 Fiscal Year that that went into effect today had been assistant police chief. However, the city has done away with that position, Stasiak said.

Miller’s current title is day shift captain with administrative duties, Stasiak said. Miller is currently in charge of administration for the night shift also, according to Stasiak.

The city manager said he will soon begin the process to hire a new police chief.

“We will put a job description together and get it addressed,” he said.

Lyles, a veteran of the McAlester Police Department, could not be reached for comment as this article was being prepared for publication.
