At least four McAlester residents charged with child abuse since March

McALESTER — At least four McAlester residents were charged with child abuse in three separate cases during March and April.

Marylynn Russell, 26, and Kyle David Murray, 30, were charged March 26 in Pittsburg County Court with felony child abuse by injury. Court documents allege they used a “curtain wand” to discipline their 5-year-old son, causing significant bruising.

According to a court affidavit, Russell allegedly told police she noticed the bruises from spanking her son the day before, was worried about leaving more bruises but went ahead and spanked the boy with a belt anyway.

Special Pittsburg County District Judge Tim Mills reduced the charges to misdemeanors on April 17 in a plea agreement with prosecutors. As part of the agreement, both parents pleaded no contest, were fined $100 each, and judgment and sentencing were deferred for one year. They were also ordered to attend anger management classes.

In a separate case, Terrance Dimarco Kenney, 38, was charged with felony child abuse by injury after police officers found bruises found on the back of his 5-year-old stepson.

Court records allege Kenney used a fly swatter on the boy’s back.

Kenney pleaded no contest to the charge April 3 and judgment and sentencing were deferred for two years; he was fined $200, and was ordered to attend anger management and parenting classes.

In a third case, Marc Steve Smith was charged April 8 with felony child abuse by injury after his wife reported he left a hand-print on the backside of his 2-year-old son.

After an examination, police said it was determined that the bruising was caused by blunt force trauma.

Smith pleaded not guilty and a preliminary hearing in the case is set for Thursday.

No working telephone numbers were found for Smith, Kenney, Murray or Russell.
