Colder weather expected

McALESTER — Colder temperatures with an inch of sleet and snow could hit Pittsburg County Sunday followed by rain and freezing rain Sunday night, according Kevin Enloe, director of the local office of emergency management.

He said there is a chance of some power outages today and urged drivers to use precaution when driving.

“The roads and bridges could be slick,” he said.

Enloe, who directs the McAlester and Pittsburg County Office of Emergency Management, also said there is a possibility of downed power lines and tree branches.

“Do not approach downed power lines; call them in right away,” he said.

“Wear layered clothing if you must go outside.”

Pete Synder, meteorologist National Weather Service in Tulsa, said Saturday that stronger precipitation is expected Sunday night with a possibility of sleet and freezing rain. Some thunderstorms could hit the area.

A low for today is expected at 20 degrees. Temperatures are expected to drop to 13 degrees Monday morning with a wind-chill of minus 3 degrees, Synder said.

By Tuesday, the weather should warm up in the afternoon to about 45 degrees and  warmer temperatures in the 50-degree range are expected on Wednesday and Thursday. Friday’s highs are expected to be in the 60s, he said.
