McALESTER — A man was found dead Sunday near the train tracks on North Main Street, according to McAlester Police Det. Kevin Hearod.

Nathan Hiram Oneal, 40, of McAlester was reported dead just after 2 p.m. by witnesses, according to a police report.

The death occurred sometime between Saturday at 5 p.m. and noon Sunday, the report states.

The case is being called a homicide-murder and non-negligent manslaughter, according to the report.

Hearod said it appeared the man may have been beaten to death, but the exact cause of death has not yet be determined.

“We suspect foul play, but we don’t want to release too much information during the investigation,” Hearod said.

According to the report, police believe a blunt object was used in the assault.

Oneal’s body was found under a bridge on Cherokee Avenue and North Main Street, near the McAlester Recycling Center, according to the report.

The area where he was found is a popular hangout for the homeless according to workers at the McAlester recycling plant.

The tunnel under the bridge near where his body was found is covered in graffiti and MPD confirmed that some of Oneal’s personal items were still at the scene on Monday.

One worker at the recycling center recalled the victim.

“He used see him here almost here everyday,” said Jerry Anderson, supervisor of the recycling plant.

“He was a nice guy.”

Meanwhile the MPD is searching for suspects in the case.

“We do not have any suspects at this time, but we are chasing several leads,” Hearod said.
