Former city resident sentenced to federal prison term

McALESTER — A former McAlester resident has been sentenced to 11 and two-thirds years in federal prison.

Anthony Dexter Washington II, 28, of Oklahoma City, has been sentenced to 140 months in federal prison, followed by three years of supervised release, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Oklahoma.

Washington was sentenced for possession of controlled substances with intent to distribute, the U.S. Attorney’s office said.

Charges arose from an investigation by the McAlester Police Department, the Pittsburg County Sheriff’s Department and the federal Drug Enforcement Administration Drug Task Force.

Washington was indicted in January 2013. He and co-defendant Maurice Elon Edwards, 29, of Spencer, were  found guilty by a federal jury during a trial held in September 2013, the U.S. attorney’s office said.

The evidence presented at trial proved that on or about January 14, 2012, in McAlester, Washington and Edwards aided and abetted each other to unlawfully, knowingly and intentionally possess with the intent to distribute five grams or more of methamphetamine, and a mixture or substance containing a detectable amount of marijuana, according to the U.S. attorney’s office.

U.S. District Judge Ronald A. White, who is district judge in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Oklahoma in Muskogee, presided over the sentencing hearing. Washington is to remain in custody of the U.S. Marshal Service pending transportation to the designated federal prison at which he will serve his nonparolable sentence, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Kyle Waters represented the federal government at the sentencing hearing.
