Man charged with domestic assault, possession of narcotics

McALESTER — A McAlester man has been charged with possession of a controlled, dangerous substance and domestic assault and battery in the presence of a minor after a sheriff’s deputy were dispatched to a residence along U.S. Highway 69.

Ricky Southard, 46, is accused of punching a female, cutting her right eye and leaving marks on her neck and arms, because dinner was not ready when he got home, according to allegations.

He was charged with the two counts on Thursday.

According to a court affidavit written by Dep. Johnny Jenkins, Southard allegedly became upset at officers when they arrived and demanded them off his property. When officers informed him they were present because of a domestic violence call, they asked him not to go inside. Southard allegedly attempted to go in, was stopped and made a motion indicating that he was ready to fight the police. Jenkins said that he drew his Taser and demanded Southard not to go into the home.

Jenkins asked Southard what had happened and was allegedly told that he had knocked the bedroom door down because he was angry. However, when Jenkins entered the trailer house, he said in the affidavit that he noticed the injuries on the woman. He also noticed a few minors in the house, crying.

After arresting Southard, Jenkins alleged in the affidavit that a jailer found a brass container with two plastic bags in it. There was allegedly a crystal substance in the bag and the substance field-tested positive for methamphetamine, according to allegations in the affidavit.

Southard was released on $15,000 bond. He has a preliminary hearing conference on Friday at 9 a.m.
