Commissioners discuss road closure

McALESTER — A Pittsburg County resident addressed the commissioners about closing a county road during the commissioners regular meeting on Monday.

The Pittsburg County commissioners met Monday at the Pittsburg County Courthouse.

Pittsburg County resident Rhonda Martin said she would like to close First Street in Morrison Acres and place a sign in the county right-of-way.

District 2 Commissioner Kevin Smith told Martin that in order to have a road closed she would need to file a petition signed by local residents.

“That would be a great first step,” Smith said.

“They don’t have to live on the street but they need to reside in the general area.”

He said once the petition is filed an agenda item would be added for the following meeting for a public forum to be held.

“It’s the legal way to do that,” Smith said.

He said after the petition has been filed and the public has been informed the commissioners would then have the closure request put on the agenda for approval by the commissioners.

“Then we can vote to leave it open or to close it,” Smith said.

Also attending Monday’s meeting was District 1 Commissioner Gene Rogers and District 3 Commissioner Trent Myers.

Pittsburg County commissioners meet Mondays at 9 a.m. in the commissioner’s conference room at the Pittsburg County Courthouse.

The meetings are open to the public.
