Kidnapping charge dismissed for McAlester man

McALESTER — A felony charge of kidnapping was dismissed recently for a McAlester man after the alleged victim failed to appear in court.

Darryl Emanuel Bickham Jr., 29, was charged in February in Pittsburg County District Court in two separate cases with multiple felony counts, including kidnapping, assault, burglary and robbery.

According to court records, Bickham allegedly held a woman hostage in an apartment on Main Street in McAlester on Feb. 13. The woman told police that Bickham pushed her onto a bed, stomped the back of her head with his foot and threatened her with a knife, a police affidavit states. Bickham also allegedly locked her in a bathroom for more than an hour, the affidavit states.

Bickham then allegedly made the woman sit in a chair and would not let her leave, the affidavit states. The woman told police that Bickham “kept her in the apartment and told her to try and leave out the door and he would kill her,” the affidavit states.

In an interview with the News-Capital, the woman, Bridget Pemberton, said, “He held me in the bathroom for over two hours at knife point. He told me I wasn’t making it out of there alive.” Pemberton said Bickham threatened her life multiple times throughout the ordeal. “I had to ask his permission to get dressed,” she said.

The following day, Bickham allegedly took the woman’s cell phone, bank card, work keys and house keys, according to the affidavit. The woman told police that before Bickham left the apartment the next day, he allegedly told her “if he came back to the apartment tonight and she was not there that he ... would burn her house down.” Pemberton said he threatened to bring harm to her family as well.

Pemberton told the News-Capital she has known Bickham all her life. “We went to school together,” she said. She also said she has been in a serious dating relationship with, and living with, Bickham for almost 18 months. “I’ve never known him to act like this,” Pemberton said.

According to court records, Pemberton did not show up to Bickham’s court hearing in the case and charges against him were dismissed.

In a separate case, McAlester police investigated another incident involving Bickham. According to a police affidavit in that case, Bickham allegedly assaulted another woman in the Wendy’s parking lot in McAlester on Feb. 18. He allegedly stole the woman’s car keys, cell phone and bit her on her back, the affidavit states. He also allegedly threatened her with more physical violence.

In that case, Bickham pleaded no contest June 4 to an amended charge of felony domestic assault and battery and received a four-year suspended sentence. A charge of robbery was dismissed in that case. Bickham was ordered to obtain a mental health evaluation and anger management assessment.
