Middle school students representing four area schools recently competed at the 2014 Southeast Region MATHCOUNTS competition at Eastern Oklahoma State College in Wilburton. The MATHCOUNTS Competition is a national middle school coaching and competitive mathematics program that promotes mathematics achievement through a series of “bee” style contests. After working throughout the school year, students enrolled in sixth, seventh and eighth grade compete at four levels including school, region, state and nationals. The top two teams and an All-Star Squad and a coach advance to the state competition on March 1 in Tulsa. The team from Wilburton earned first place honors and was named Most Improved School. The team will advance to the state competition on March 1 in Tulsa. Team members standing from left are, Gilles Goddard, Tyler Crabtree, Devon Cox, Coach Mary Kendrick; and seated, Dylan Johnson, Anthony Hernandez and Levi Knight. Crabtree was named the top eighth grade student in the competition and Hernandez and Johnson were named to the All-Star Squad.
