MJ’S LIST OF THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT SEVERE WEATHER COVERAGE ON THE MCALESTER NEWS-CAPITAL FACEBOOK PAGE:

McALESTER — MJ’S LIST OF THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT SEVERE WEATHER COVERAGE ON THE MCALESTER NEWS-CAPITAL FACEBOOK PAGE:

• A post will be made informing McAlester News-Capital friends and “Likers” that the page will provide severe storm coverage. Technology sometimes fails, so in case it does fail, or there is no one available from the McAlester News-Capital to post severe weather information, make sure you have another reliable source for severe weather information.

• This page will only contain information about weather related to Pittsburg County, Oklahoma

• Only information provided by National Weather Service, McAlester/Pittsburg County Office of Emergency Management, Associated Press and other official sources will be posted by staff

• Pictures of radar images are screen shots from iPhone and MacBook Pro from official iPhone weather applications or official weather websites

• During severe weather the moderator of the site — who is most likely webmaster MJ Brickey — may become busy processing severe weather information and/or — because technology is fallible — may not see your questions, comments and posts. Questions may go unanswered.

• Please refresh the page and look at the top for the latest weather updates. If there are no new posts, then we have not received new information, or browers and internet connection could be slow.

• After some trial and error, a rubric has been made to collect information that is relevant to Pittsburg County weather answering questions such as last known location of severe weather being reported, what is contained in the storm (hail, rain, high wind, etc.), what type of watch or warning, precautions that should be taken, etc. This rubric — and a protocol — has been made up based on various questions that needed answered during the last storms.

• Commenting is encouraged. However, comments containing weather reports not confirmed by local and official sources, hearsay, rumors or assumptions as well as attacking others who comment within the threads are subject to be deleted, but then again could go unnoticed. Comments containing weather reports not confirmed by official sources, hearsay, rumors or assumptions as well as attacking others who comment within the threads causes panic, confusion and are counter productive to the mission of safety.

• Other McAlester News-Capital related posts such as other local news may be posted between severe weather updates.

• For suggestions, complaints, and rants related to McAlester News-Capital Facebook page, or for information unrelated to severe weather during severe weather coverage, contact MJ Brickey by email at mjbrickey@journalist.com, rather leaving them in McAlester News-Capital Facebook posts’ threads. Emails will be answered from time it is received to 48 business hours.

• McAlester News-Capital is working in cooperation with the McAlester/Pittsburg County Office of Emergency Management and storm spotters. OEM can be reached for damage reports at 918-423-5655, 24-hours-a-day, seven days a week. If there is no answer, EOM has advised for those reporting to leave their name, number and location of the damage report.

• Thank you for your patience and we look forward to furthering Pittsburg County’s severe weather safety.

  • ent_taylorswift.jpg There's less good music now — here's why

Taylor Swift, the seven-time Grammy winner, is known for her articulate lyrics, so there was nothing surprising about her writing a long column for The Wall Street Journal about the future of the music industry. Yet there's reason to doubt the optimism of what she had to say.

When you’re in the middle of errands and your fuel gauge hits the red zone, what do you do? Skip the gas station and try to make it back home on ‘E’? Even if you make it home, what will you do the next time you need to drive your car? It’s not worth the ten minutes saved. Who wants to be stranded on the side of the road, forced to walk to the nearest filling station or wait for a tow?

  • Todd Lamb From the Capitol: Staycation in Oklahoma

With the summer travel season quickly approaching, many Oklahomans are making plans for their summer vacations. I would encourage Oklahomans to look in our own backyard and explore all that Oklahoma has to offer this summer. All ages and all travel enthusiasts can find something of interest here at home.
