Washington — Everybody knows that corporations are not people, but it may take a constitutional amendment to reverse the Supreme Court’s decision.

Oregon is now the 16th state to call on Congress to pass an amendment to overturn the 2010 Supreme Court’s Citizen’s United decision.

Oregon now joins California, Hawaii, New Jersey, New Mexico, Rhode Island, Vermont, Connecticut, Colorado, Montana, Delaware, Maine, West Virginia and Illinois in asking Congress to overturn the Supreme Court decision.

“Gutting corporate money out of politics is the key to restoring a healthy democracy.Kos Joan McCarter It is time to elect public officials who care more about their voting constituents than their donating constituents and to have nine Supreme Court Justices who care more about the rule of law than the rule of the dollar.” -- Daily,

On July 2, Senators Jon Tester (D-Montana) and Chris Murphy (D-Connecticut) proposed a constitutional amendment that would establish that corporations are not people with constitutional rights. This would overthrow the Supreme Court’s 2010 Citizens United decision which holds that corporations have a First Amendment right to spend unlimited funds on political campaigns as long as that spending is independent from candidates and political parties. (This ruling ballooned the idea of Super Pacs) Senate Minority leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) criticized a proposed constitutional amendment to eliminate corporate personhood rights on Friday calling this idea “absurd.” -- Huffington Post, Ashley Balcersak

Earlier this year, Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vermont) and Representative Ted Deutch (D-Florida) introduced a constitutional amendment directly aimed at overturning the Supreme Court’s ruling.

Corporate money is supporting the political machine that drives the desires of the corporate world while the working man and woman suffer from legislation that benefits big business but is uncaring for the working poor.  Legislators selling their votes for profit is especially demeaning as we celebrate our democracy on the 4th of July.
