Some real people catch a break

Power to the people! Sometimes! A few weeks ago, I reported to you that SB 1600, an act increasing penalties for elder abuse that passed the Senate overwhelmingly, was not going to be heard in Committee in the House. Oh what a difference a few thousand e-mails make. Under this pressure, it was heard in Committee and passed 16 to 0. It passed on the House floor, which made me especially happy because I co-authored the bill. I also co-authored HB 1640, which passed the House. This creates the Quality After School Opportunities Act to reduce child obesity and improve academic performance.

Other bills of significance that passed the House:

SB 1816: this bill gives our county commissioners the power to put a seven day burn ban into effect. It is important to note that in this bill a governor’s ban supersedes any county ban.

SB 1141: this bill passed the House, and removes the 3 percent increase in state revenue growth requirement to be able to spend funds for roads and bridges. I know our county commissioners will be happy, and it will help in rebuilding the horrible county roads and bridges in Oklahoma.

It was a pleasure to celebrate “Senior Day” at the Capitol this week. It was also a pleasure visiting with the members of KEDDO, and Chester Dennis. This group is very critical for providing services in the rural counties of Southeast Oklahoma. I received “special hugs” from Joann Grippando, Barbara Forrester and Norma Patton.
