Jury recommends life for man found guilty of drug trafficking

ENID, Okla. — A Garfield County jury recommended a life-without-parole sentence for an Oklahoma City man found guilty of drug trafficking.

Quentin Dewayne Jones, 35, was found guilty Tuesday of felony trafficking in illegal drugs and possession of controlled dangerous substance, and a misdemeanor count of unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.

Jones was charged in January 2011 after Enid Police Department officers served a no-knock search warrant at the Holiday Motel for Jones’ and two other peoples’ room.

Officers executed the search warrant at about 8:25 p.m. Jan. 11 at the motel, 2712 Rock Island.

Detectives collected 18 grams of crack cocaine, 4.8 grams of marijuana and a set of digital scales from a night stand in the room.

In the drawer of the nightstand, detectives found five packages of marijuana, with a total weight of 35.6 grams, a plastic bag of methamphetamine weighing 7.9 grams and an unmarked pill bottle containing 52 hydrocodone tablets.

Also collected was a wallet belonging to Quentin Jones containing $650 cash and an Oklahoma identification card. Five of the bills in the wallet were recorded bills used in a previous undercover drug buy of crack from Quentin Jones. In the bottom of the night stand, detectives found plastic sandwich bags as well as a package of crack rock weighing 0.9 grams, in a black shoe.

Jones had three prior felony convictions: two for possession of crack cocaine with the intent to distribute and one for possessing drugs in a penal institution.

Assistant District Attorney Tallena Hart said Jones was eligible for a sentence of life without parole in this case, due to his three prior felony drug convictions.

“Under state law, if a person who has previously been convicted of two or more separate felony violations of the Uniform Controlled Dangerous Substances Act commits the crime of trafficking in illegal drugs, the punishment is life without parole,” she said.

The jury recommended Jones serve life without parole on the trafficking charge and pay $25,000 in fines, serve 20 years on the possession and pay a $10,000 fine and spend one year in the county jail for the paraphernalia charge.

Jurors heard testimony from EPD Narcotics Detectives Greg Liebl and Zeke Frazee, and Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation criminal analyst Anthony Goldman.

Hart represented the state and court-appointed attorney Jeff Crites represented Jones. District Judge Paul Woodward presided over the case.

Jones also has a pending distribution of controlled dangerous drugs charge. In that case, Jones is accused of selling drugs to a confidential informant.

Jones is set for sentencing at 8:30 Friday. He also has a Jan. 27, 2014, bond appearance on his remaining case.
