Douglass picks off Ada

Ada — The Ada-Douglass slugfest was all tied up at 18-18 with just under two minutes to go in the game. The Cougars had stolen the momentum by stopping Douglass star Deondre Clark short on a fourth-and-2 run.

However, during the next 53 seconds, everything went terribly wrong for the Cougars.

Douglass junior Dameko Doddles scored two long jaw-dropping touchdowns during that short span to help the third-ranked Trojans stun No. 8 Ada 30-18 .

Douglass won the District 4A-2 title, improving to 9-1 and 7-0 while Ada slumped to 7-3 and 5-2 after losing back-to-back games. The Cougars will now host No. 5 Woodward (7-3, 5-2) in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs while the Trojans will entertain Elgin (5-5, 4-3).

“I think these two teams were pretty evenly matched. Hat’s off to them for playing a little bit better than we did and winning the football game,” Ada head coach Matt Weber said following the game. “We played hard and prepared hard, and it’s tough when you do that and it doesn’t come out your way.”

Quasean intercepted Ada quarterback Cory Kilby to give the Trojans the ball near midfield with 1:38 left to play. On the first Douglass play that followed, Doddles caught a pass from QB Patrick McKaufman as he knifed between two Ada defenders and went 51 yards for the go-ahead touchdown with 1:27 left.

On the Cougars’ next possession, Ada faced a third-and-long when Kilby was hit by a Douglass defender just as he was heaving the ball down the field. Doddles was there to make the interception and turn it into a 53-yard pick 6 to give the visitors their 12-point victory.

“It just came down to who makes a few less mistakes and they made less mistakes than we did,” Weber said.

The Cougars dug themselves completely out of a 18-6 hole when — after a scoreless third quarter — went 55 yards in just six plays capped by 1-yard TD plunge by tailback Shiloh Windsor. Isiah Shaputis blocked Todd Penick’s PAT try that would have given Ada its first lead of the game and left the scored tied at 18-apiece with 7:54 to play. Kilby completed passes of 23 yards (to Montrell Black) and 21 yards (to Gabriel Simons) on the drive.

Remarkably, neither team managed to convert a PAT in eight total tries.

Douglass used its vaunted rushing attack — led by Clark and Anthony Jackson — to power down the field for its first two touchdowns. Clark scored on a 7-yard run with 48 seconds left in the first quarter and Jackson scampered to the end zone from 24 yards away as the Trojans forged a 12-0 lead at the 8:33 mark of the second period.

Clark totaled 126 yards on 18 carries while Jackson finished with 125 yards on the same 18 totes.

Ada finally responded with a time-consuming, 14-play, 64-yard dive that ended when Windsor literally leaped head-first over a pair of Douglass defenders into the end zone from a yard out. That score cut the Douglass lead in half at 12-6 with just 1:58 left before halftime.

There were plenty of fireworks left in the closing minutes of the first half.

Douglass needed just one play to find the end zone again. Under heavy pressure, McKaufman heaved the ball down the far sideline. An Ada defender appeared to have a bead on the ball, but mistimed his jump. Shaputis hauled it in near midfield and sped down the sideline for a 72-yard TD catch that put Douglass ahead 18-6.

The Cougars went 54 yards in nine play in 1:02 to answer that Trojan score. But it took some clutch plays to do it.

Black had an 18-yard reception to get Ada well into Douglass territory. On third-and-15, Osahwv Frazier hauled in a pass and was pulled down at the DHS 4. But a holding penalty put Ada in a third-and-29 hole back near midfield.

Kilby hit Simons with a 15-yard strike before finding Black over the middle who made the grab, shook off a tackle attempt by Doddles and raced into the end zone with a 32-yard TD catch with just :09 left on the clock. Black would have another sensational game, finishing with seven catches for 167 yards. Simons added 78 yards on five receptions.

The Trojans led 18-12 at halftime.

Kilby would finish with 282 passing yards but the Cougars never could establish a running game against the stingy Douglass defense. Ada was limited to 20 total yards rushing.

Weber said he and veteran Clinton head coach Mike Lee believe Class 4A is wide open.

“We still have a lot to look forward to. We have a home playoff game, and if we get hot at the right time, who knows what could happen,” he said. “I talked to coach Lee this weekend, and he said he’s seen everybody and he said there’s a lot of teams out there that are quite a bit alike.”

Clinton also enters the playoffs at 7-3 and 5-2 after edging Woodward 19-14 in Week 10.
