State agents search for alleged cattle rustler

Ada — State agents are searching for a man they believe is responsible for stealing nearly 100 head of cattle in Pontotoc County.

Larry Gene Smith Jr., 48, is wanted for suspicion of larceny of a domestic animal, according to Jerry Flowers, chief agent of the law enforcement division for the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Food and Forestry.

Flowers said Wednesday that an arrest warrant with a bond of $500,000 was issued for Smith. Flowers said the investigation began when 99 head of mixed-breed steer turned up missing from landowner Jet McCoy’s ranch near Allen in early October.

“We met with Mr. McCoy in reference to these cattle either being missing or stolen.” Flowers said, “and of course our investigation has led us to the fact that they were stolen.”

Flowers said his investigation led him to Smith and another man allegedly being responsible for the theft.

“He (Smith) goes by the alias of ‘Snag,’” Flowers said. “He and an accomplice, who I can’t identify yet because his charges are in the process of being filed, did load these cattle from this McCoy ranch and took these cattle to the sale barn down in Atoka and billed-in these cattle over a period of time. The cattle were sold ... through the Atoka Livestock Market.”

“(Smith) is on the run,” Flowers said, “and we do not know where he’s at. We believe he is still in southeast Oklahoma.”

Flowers is asking anyone with information on the whereabouts of Smith to call his office at 405-522-6102. Flowers said callers can leave a message if the call is after hours. He said agents check messages throughout the evening.

“If they’ll call that number and let us know where Snag is, they can remain anonymous,” Flowers said. “We just need to know where he’s at and where to find him.”

Flowers said he expects charges to be filed soon on Smith and his alleged accomplice.
