Enid police pursuit ends in a fatality crash

ENID, Okla. — A 23-year-old Enid man did not survive a crash late Thursday night following a pursuit with Enid police.

Cody James Hamm lost control of his vehicle on Chestnut as he drove under the Van Buren overpass and into the train yard. His vehicle went airborne and he was ejected.

Enid Police Department Sgt. Dustin Albright said at about 11:20 p.m. Thursday, Officer Jonathan Sullens was patrolling on North Oakwood when he saw a white Cadillac driving northbound with no headlights.

Sullens conducted a traffic stop and the Cadillac pulled over in the 500 block of North Oakwood. As Sullens approached the vehicle, the Cadillac accelerated northbound on Oakwood and Sullens initiated a pursuit, Albright said.

“The Cadillac turned east on Chestnut and accelerated,” Albright said. “Officer Sullens continued to pursue the vehicle eastbound and observed the vehicle leave the roadway just under the Van Buren overpass.”

The Cadillac entered the train yard and became airborne. Sullens slowed his police car to make the turn but lost control and his vehicle struck a utility pole.

“Officer Sullens rushed to the pursued vehicle to check the welfare of the driver or any passengers in the car,” Albright said. “Officers found that the vehicle was empty, so they began searching the area for the driver and possible passengers.”

Hamm was found lying on the ground unconscious and bleeding from a head wound. Life EMS arrived on the scene and transported Hamm to St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center.

“Hamm did not survive the accident,” Albright said. “It is unknown why Hamm decided on the action that he took at the time.”

The sergeant said Sullens was not injured in the accident. No additional information was being released Friday afternoon.
