Dog reunited with family after missing 2 years

NORMAN — “Speedy” the Chihuahua was reunited with his family after a 26-month stint around the metro area. His owners, Lori and Don Whitton, said if he had not been micro chipped, he would not be home right now.

The Whittons urge pet owners get their animals microchipped and to renew the chip’s registration each year. Registering your pet’s microchip links its ID to your name, current phone numbers, emergency contacts and other vital information.

Speedy escaped from his fenced backyard in January 2012 and even though the Whittons did everything they couldm — posters, rewards, Craigslist, ads in a local newspaper, checking the OKC animal shelter, etc. — they could never find him.

Then, on March 10, Lori received a telephone call from Trey Amrein of the Norman Animal Welfare Center telling her Speedy was at the facility. Two University of Oklahoma students had found him on campus and brought him to be checked for a microchip

When located, he was wearing a rabies tag from a Midwest City veterinary clinic, which leads the Whittons to believe he was found shortly after his escape and adopted by a caring family. How he got to the Norman OU campus remains a mystery.
