Deployed Edmond cops honor colleague

EDMOND — Jeff Morefield, Sean Bryant and James Teel have a lot in common — they all serve in the Edmond Police Department and in the National Guard.

On Oct. 2, when Edmond Police Detective Matt Terry died unexpectedly of natural causes, they were in Afghanistan and, thus, were not able to be part of his funeral service or the cops versus firefighters softball game benefiting Terry’s family.

“The death of Detective Terry has deeply affected the Police Department,” department spokeswoman Jenny Monroe said. “In some ways it has brought us closer together, strengthened the bond of the brotherhood that was already shared. It was important to us that all were included.”

Police Sgt. Scott Fees wanted the three soldier/officers to be able to take part in the department’s celebration of Terry’s life and honoring his family. Then Fees came up with the idea to send a package and include the soldier-cops as much as possible. The care package included ballcaps and T-shirts bearing Terry’s department call sign — #316.

Monroe said Morefield, Bryant and Teel, who serve in the Oklahoma National Guard’s Alpha Battery, 1st Battalion, 158th Field Artillery Regiment, see each other about once a month in Afghanistan. They recently got together and had a photograph taken of them in their military fatigue pants, the T-shirts and the ballcaps. The photograph was posted on the Police Department’s official Facebook page, where it was “liked” by 230 people as of Friday morning.

One of those who posted a response was Terry’s widow, Kathy Terry.

“Thank you, EPD and especially Sean, Jeff and Jim,” she wrote in the post published Wednesday. “We are so honored and touched that you are thinking of Matt and of us from so very far away. We pray with gratitude for your tribute, but even more so for your service and a safe homecoming.”

Monroe said current thinking is Morefield, Bryant and Teel are scheduled to return from Afghanistan sometime in July.
