Buster makes a splash: Dogs hit the water at Super Retriever Series jumping dock

ENID, Okla. — With a little coaxing from his owner, and the promise of getting his ball back, Buster bravely toed the edge of the Super Retriever Series’ jumping dock Friday at Oakwood Mall.

The 10-year-old Cairn terrier and Jack Russell mix hesitated briefly before splashing into the 30-foot-long pool set up for the SRS.

Buster’s owner, Judy Mason, said she brought her furry friend out last year for the Fun with Super Dock Dogs, an opportunity for the community to bring their dogs out and jump from the Super Dock.

“He was out here last year and jumped four or five times,” Mason said. “He made it out 6 feet last year.”

While Buster may not have been breaking any records, he was eager to go, jumping three times from the dock in about five minutes.

Mason said Buster got “excited” prior to the event when she asked if he wanted to go get in the water.

“It’s amazing how dogs will know words, and ‘water’ is one he knows,” she explained.

Mason said Buster performed “good” Friday in his trio of jumps from the dock.

“He’s a really good little dog,” she said. “We’ll keep coming out if they keep having it here.”

Tammy Smoot and her 11⁄2-year-old yellow Labrador retriever Ruger made their first trip to the Super Dock.

Smoot said she and her husband have had five Labrador retrievers, but never have taken them to a Super Dock event.

“We love Labs and we’ve watched it on TV, but have never been,” Smoot said. “This is our fifth Lab we’ve had, so I figured I’d bring him out.”

She said Ruger was no stranger to water, her husband hunts with dogs, but she said Ruger was not used to jumping into a giant pool.

Following Buster’s example, Ruger showed some trepidation at the edge of the dock, but managed a few more feet out of his jump than Buster did. However, Ruger took a few victory laps before coming to the three people calling him from the pool’s exit.

“I wasn’t sure what he would do,” Smoot said.

Super Retriever Series owner and operator Shannon Nardi also got her yellow Labrador retrievers — Gia, 10, and her daughter, 4-year-old Whoopsy — in on the action.

She said the fun jump allows people in the community to test their dogs’ ability or just come and have a good time. Dog owners have to sign a waiver.

Nardi said at a past event she’s had some from the Fun Jump sign up for the amateur competition and win the division. Those wanting to compete as amateurs can pay a $10 entry fee, with all money going back to competitors.

Two fun jumps are planned today at 10 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. if time permits for the afternoon fun jump.

Randy Woods, also with Super Retriever Series, suggested dog owners bring a toy the dogs will want to retrieve. Otherwise they might not make the plunge.
