Enid SPCA pet food drive nets 1,600 pounds of food

ENID, Okla. — The fifth annual Hungry Bowl Pet Food Drive, held earlier this month, netted 1,606 pounds of pet food for the Enid SPCA food pantry.

The food is given to local residents who struggle with pet expenses. The SPCA pet food pantry now is stocked with 1,289 pounds of dog food and 317 pounds of cat food.

Vickie Grantz, executive director of Enid SPCA, said more food will have to be collected in order to adequately supply the need.

Bark Avenue Pet Taxi and Sitter Service sponsors and coordinates the pet food drive as part of an international effort led by Pet Sitters International, the largest association of professional pet sitters, to collect pet food for local shelters.

“The pet food drive each year is my small contribution to support those in our local rescue community,” said Kyla Culbert, owner of Bark Avenue. “They are truly heroes to me.”

Culbert thanked everyone who participated in this year’s food drive, whether by donating space for a collection box or donating pet food.

“New this year, collection boxes were placed at Atwoods Ranch & Home — who also donated wrapping paper for boxes — and at Vance Air Force Base,” Culbert said. “One of our pet lovers at The Cat Clinic offered to place a box and transport the donations collected.”

Culbert said donations will continue to be accepted through the end                   of January.

“If anyone would like to make a donation to aid the Hungry Bowl Pet Food Drive, they can do so at the SPCA office, located at 1116 Overland Trail,” Culbert said. “Just tell the staff member that it is for the Hungry Bowl Pet Food Drive so that it is directed to the Pet Food Bank.”

Grantz said there can be many reasons pet owners need assistance.

“This can include many different situations from a loss of income to simply being on a fixed income,” Grantz said. “We don’t want anyone to have to choose between grocery expenses or pet food expenses. Hopefully, this help can prevent families from possibly having to surrender their pet to a shelter for financial reasons. All donations are greatly appreciated.”

Donation boxes were placed this year at Atwoods, 5400 W. Garriott; Evans, 1108 W. Willow; Groom Closet, 2005 W. Chestnut; Jumbo West, 2311 W. Willow; Pet Salon, 626 N. Van Buren; PetSense, 3410 W. Garriott; SPCA, 1116 Overland Trail; United West, 4110 W. Garriott; and Vance Air Force Base.
