Ada tennis coach honored

Ada — Veteran Ada High tennis coach Skip Griese has been named one of 21 coaches from across the country as a 2013 National Coach of the Year by the National Federation of State High School Associations Coaches Association.

Griese was the boys national tennis coach of the year after guiding Ada to back-to-back state titles in 2012 and 2013.

“The award comes from the dedications of players, the support of the parents and the opportunity to coach for an Ada school system that let’s me coach and do my job,” Griese said. “That’s just the way I have to look at it.”

Griese advanced through the nomination process and was chosen to represent the Southwest Section (covering Oklahoma, Arkansas, Colorado, Texas and New Mexico). All the nominees from eight different sections of the United States were then turned over to an advisory committee which picked the national coaches of the year.

Griese, in his 30th year as the Ada boys and girls tennis coach, has coached seven state championship teams (five boys titles and two girls titles).

“I’ve been very fortunate with the kids that have played tennis for me and the dedication that they give to the sport,” he said.

Along with the state championships, Griese has kept Ada a perennial state title contender in both boys and girls tennis for decades. His teams have won countless regional championships and had made a plethora of state tournament appearances.

“Coach Griese has obviously proven to be a tremendous tennis coach over the years, but just as importantly, he continues to take great pride in his work in the classroom and at school in general,” said Ada High Athletic Director Mike Anderson. “This is a tremendous honor and an accomplishment we can all take pride in. Coach Griese is most deserving of this award and always represents Ada City Schools in a very positive manner.”
