Termination of fire chief upheld by Kingfisher City Commission

KINGFISHER, Okla. — Kingfisher City Commission, in a special meeting Tuesday, upheld the termination of former Kingfisher Fire Chief Randy Poindexter.

Poindexter on Oct. 9 appealed his Sept. 25 termination by City Manager Dave Slezickey.

The commissioners voted 3 to 1 to uphold the termination after a two-hour meeting. A staff member in the Kingfisher City Clerk’s office said commissioners spent about an hour and a half of that time in executive session.

“Obviously we disagree with that decision,” said Matt Smith, Poindexter’s lawyer. “We gave the board ample evidence and argument that the reasons given for the termination were invalid and outlandish.”

Smith said Poindexter has a lot of support among Kingfisher residents.

“I would say at least 100 people took time out from their jobs and lives and turned out to support him,” Smith said.

Smith said Poindexter plans to remain in Kingfisher.

“Chief Poindexter is not leaving,” Smith said. “As far as the termination, we are in the process of exploring all options.”

Poindexter, who was fire chief about six years, received a Medal of Valor for his actions during flooding in 2007.

Smith said the reason only four of Kingfisher’s five commissioners voted on the appeal was because the mayor, Jack Stuteville, did not attend. Poindexter and Smith earlier asked the mayor recuse himself from participating in the appeal because of an unrelated lawsuit pending against the mayor and others filed by Poindexter’s brother, Chris Poindexter.
