Police: Enid attorney arrested for domestic battery

ENID, Okla. — Enid attorney Eric Edwards, 45, was arrested Tuesday afternoon on a complaint of domestic battery, according to the Enid Police Department; however, his attorney said he was “not arrested.”

“Enid Police received a report of a domestic battery from Edwards’ wife yesterday morning,” an EPD release states. “Detectives located Eric Edwards at the Garfield County Courthouse this afternoon and arrested him without incident.”

Official charges have not been filed and Edwards was released on his own recognizance, his attorney Stephen Jones said

As of 5:30 p.m., Edwards had not been booked through Garfield County Detention Facility.

Jones said Edwards was not arrested. Jones said he went to the courthouse and got Edwards out of the courtroom to make an appearance before a judge.

Jones said his client’s spouse is “...  attempting to use the criminal process as leverage in a divorce and child custody dispute and by staging an incident at a place she had no legal authority to be ... ”

Jones said police have aided Edwards’ spouse by their actions.

“Because of her husband’s success as a criminal defense attorney, who has embarrassed the credibility of the Enid Police Department on more than one occasion, they have willfully aided her by first not returning my phone calls or Mr. Edwards’, second by producing five detectives at the courthouse for a misdemeanor probable cause action and by issuing a ‘press release.’”

Jones questioned how many times police issue a press release on an probable cause affidavit. He said no charges have been filed against Edwards and the local judge and district attorney’s office have recused themselves.

Jones also said he and Edwards were investigating filing a new civil rights violation against members of Enid Police Department, Edwards’ spouse and others.

“The open season on Eric Edwards has been closed,” Jones said.

Online court records show a protective order was filed and issued Monday, the same day the incident was reported. A show cause hearing, to determine if the order will stand, was set for Oct. 30.
