Pond Creek-Hunter school voters reject $11.5 million bond issue

Pond Creek-Hunter Public Schools patrons rejected a $11.5 million bond issue Tuesday for construction of a gymnasium and multi-purpose safe room, along with other projects.

The vote was 252-203 against the proposal, or 55.4 percent in opposition. School bond issues require a 60 percent super-majority to pass.

According to the ballot proposal, funds would have been for construction; equipment; repairing and remodeling school buildings; acquiring furniture, fixtures and equipment; and acquiring and improving school sites.

School board President Jeff Scott said he was disappointed in the outcome.

“That’s about all I can say right now. I’m disappointed that it didn’t pass,” he said. “I think it would have done some great things for the school and the community.”

The multi-purpose safe room, which could hold students and staff, as well as members of the public, would have been built above ground. Funding also would have been used to replace the HVAC unit at the high school as well as:

• New windows for school buildings.

• Restroom improvements and a track around the football field.

Scott said it’s too soon to say whether the school board will submit a restructured bond issue.

“That’s something that the board’s going to have to come together on and discuss, and see where things move on from there,” he said.

Voters in Kingfisher County approved a half-cent sales tax for five years, with funds to go toward road and bridge maintenance.

The vote was 318-156, or 67.1 percent in favor. The tax is for five years.

In Woodward, voters approved two bond issue proposals totaling $29 million.

The proposals would provide for safe rooms for every school in the district, bolster security and provide upgraded facilities, transportation and technology.

The votes for the propositions were 956-237 and 976-224 in favor. Both votes were more than 80 percent in favor.
