Enid’s Carver Center is working to gain GED testing site certification

ENID, Okla. — The new year brings many changes to GED testing, including that the tests can only be taken online at a certified testing site.

Enid’s Carver Center is working to obtain its certification as a GED testing site. Clayton Nolen, director of Carver Educational Center, said he and staff are working hard to obtain official certification, and he expects Carver will be certified by the end of the month.

“We have to take a test and after the test, we’ll be certified,” Nolen said.

Under the new testing protocol, someone at the testing center has to be on site to take the student into the receiving room, take a picture of them at the computer and then the student takes the test online.

At this moment, until Carver Center  officially is certified, the closest testing site is in Ponca City.

“Right now there’s no one in the northwestern part of the state has one set up,” Nolen said.

Nevertheless, classes to prepare for the GED test are ongoing, Nolen said.

“We will be still offering classes to help the students accomplish their goal,” Nolen said.

It’s not too late to enroll for classes that begin next week, but enrollment closes at 4 p.m. Thursday.

Students 16 and 17 must have a consent form signed and notarized by Thursday in order to enroll.

Academic improvement classes are designed both for people who want to earn their GED and for students needing a boost with specific subjects, such as those going back to college in need of a refresher course.

Classes will be available in math, English, science, social studies and literature. Classes will be 9-11:30 a.m. Monday through Thursday and 6-9 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday.

English as a second language classes will meet 6-9 p.m. Monday and Wednesday.

There is no charge to enroll in Carver Education Center classes, but pre-enrollment is necessary because the only funding available is from federal sources, Nolen said.

To enroll or for information, call (580) 366-7200 or visit Carver, 815 S. 5th, between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. weekdays.
