Billy G. Ferrell

McALESTER — Billy Guy Ferrell, 83, died Saturday, May 24, 2014, at Walnut Grove Nursing Home in McAlester.

No services were held.

He was born in Quinton and often related his experiences of living through the Dust Bowl era. He was a 1949 graduate of Indianola High School, where he played on the district champion basketball team.

He volunteered for the United States Army at the beginning of the Korean War, serving as airman first class from 1949 to 1952.

Following his military service, he pursued a civil service career, working for the post office in Tulsa and then the Federal Aviation Administration in Oklahoma City.

He was a member of both the American Legion and the Elks Lodge in McAlester.

He was an avid reader and had a strong intellectual curiosity. He was well-versed in military and American history and had a lifelong interest in the history, and the people and the politics of Mexico and Latin America. He continued his exploration of the people and politics of the larger world until the last few days of his life.

Survivors include his wife, Norma Jean Ferrell; his children, Rhett Ferrell and Erin, and Laurie Ferrell and Deneen Newman, all of California; 11 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Mary Casey and Buddy Circle, of Oklahoma City, and her three daughters; one stepson, Vernon Moore and Janet, of Maine; one stepdaughter, Sandra Goshen and Eli, of McAlester; three stepgrandchildren and six stepgreat-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Maggie Ruth Ferrell Crossno and William Guy Ferrell.

    Alyce Yvonne Knight Lerblance was born on November 21, 1923, in Pittsburg, Oklahoma, to Fred C. and Letha Mae Knight.  She was the fourth of seven children born to Fred and Letha Knight.  Alyce grew up in Wilburton and graduated with the class of 1941 and was a graduate of Eastern State A & M in Wilburton.
