McALESTER — Phillips Stewart Smith, a longtime McAlester area resident, died Saturday, July 6, 2013, in Eufaula.

Funeral services will be held at a later date. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Cornerstone Funeral Home and Crematory of Muskogee.

Born Dec. 2, 1929, in Cambridge, Mass., he was the son of Wendell P. Smith and Marian Hesse Smith. He worked as a college professor of romance languages, was a psychiatric social worker and owner of a ranch near Stuart, where he raised cattle and buffalo.

He received a bachelor’s degree from Harvard College and a masters degree from the University of North Carolina.

He served as an officer in the United States Navy from 1953 to 1957.

Prior to moving to Oklahoma in 1972, he lived in New England and North Carolina.

He was a traveler, a student of paleontology and geology and a model railroading enthusiast

Survivors include his wife, Tretha Smith; his children, Stephen Smith, David Smith, Carolynne Hagan and Rebecca Glenn, and eight great-grandchildren.
