James J. Thaxton, 85, of Indianola, died Wednesday, July 3, 2013, at New Hope Retirement and Care Center.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Brumley-Mills Chapel with the Rev. Arty Joe Hearod officiating. Burial will be at Tannehill Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Brumley-Mills Funeral Home of McAlester.
Born Sept. 27, 1927, in Marietta, he was the son of Homer and Ella Mae (Armstrong) Thaxton. He served in the United States Army and was a truck driver.
He married Lena Sexton on Oct. 20, 2007, in Lone Grove.
He was a member of Lone Grove Baptist Church and enjoyed playing dominos and bingo.
Survivors include his wife, Lena Thaxton, of the home; four stepchildren, Mary White, Decatur, Texas, Lewis Martin, of Indianola, Louise Ashworth, of McAlester, and Billy Martin, Forney, Texas; nine stepgrandchildren and 15 stepgreat-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers and one sister.
