William David Sitters

McALESTER — William David Sitters, 72, of Hartshorne, died Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2013, at St. Francis Hospital in Tulsa.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at First Assembly of God Church with the Revs. Scott Horstman and Dan Denny officiating. Burial will follow at Holy Rosary Catholic Cemetery.

Arrangements are under the direction of Brumley-Mills Funeral Home, in Hartshorne.

He was born Sept. 2, 1941, in Hartshorne to Joseph and Mamie (Skaggs) Sitters. He grew up and graduated from high school there and then attended Eastern State College, earning an associate degree.

He served in the U. S. Navy and upon receiving his honorable discharge returned to Hartshorne where he lived all his life. He worked as a purchasing agent for Pittsburg County, then worked for the state as an equipment operator. He had also served the city of Hartshorne as city manager and also served on the city council.

He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and belonged to the Hartshorne Chamber of Commerce.

He was well-known as the fiddler in the local band Kountry Kowboys and was an expert at repairing and rebuilding acoustic instruments. He enjoyed going on family camping trips and spending time with his grandchildren.

He was of the Catholic faith.

He is survived by his wife, Norma Sitters; son, Billy James, of McAlester; daughters, Teresa Farris, and husband, Mike, of Hartshorne, Charlotte Howry, and husband, Bill, of  High Hill, and Elizabeth Wilson, and husband Jimmy Don, of Hartshorne; step-children, Diane Haws, and husband, Charles, of Union, Mo., and Debra Stiffler, of Tulsa; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren; and sisters, Frances Rich, of Hartshorne, and Jeannette Baerswyl, of El Reno.

He was preceded in the death by his parents, a brother, Joe, and a sister, Marie.

Pallbearers will be David Spears, Clint Spears, Todd Stiffler, Carl Thompson, Jerome Amaranto, Bill Baker, Pete Swaffors and Jim Wilson. Honorary pallbearers will be Dales Spears, Gilbert Eddington, Leon Burke, Jerry Gilreath, George Dunagan and Scott Zachary.

Military honors will be provided by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1098 of McAlester.
