Charles Herman Tipps

McALESTER — Charles Herman Tipps, 83, of McAlester, died Friday, Oct. 4, 2013, at St. John Medical Center in Tulsa.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today at Bishop Chapel of Memories with Kevin Wright and Red Coleman officiating. Burial will be at Oak Hill Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Bishop Funeral Service of McAlester.

Born Feb. 3, 1930, in Myra, Texas, he was the son of Mount Herman and Elsie Mae (Mannering) Tipps. His family moved from Texas to Tishomingo when he was 6 months old. The Tipps family farmed in Tishomingo before moving to town to become the groundskeepers at the city golf course. He received his education in Tishomingo, where he lettered in football.

Following high school, he married Nettie Florence Evans on Nov. 25, 1949, in Gainesville, Texas. They made their home on the college campus in Tishomingo where he was employed and his wife was a student. It was during this time that they had a daughter. He moved his family to Comanche and then to Duncan, where he worked for Kendrick & King Lumber Yard. It was during this time that they had a son.

They then moved their family to Odessa, Texas where he learned the flooring trade from his wife’s brother. Sometime later, the family moved back to Oklahoma and purchased a flooring business in Ada. In 1964, they relocated the flooring business to McAlester. He owned and operated McAlester Floor Covering, later Tipps Carpet, for a number of years.

In the early 1970s he went to work at Jackie Brannon Correctional Center in McAlester. He worked in security, retiring after 20 years of service to the state of Oklahoma.

He was an accomplished golfer, having made 11 holes-in-one (his first at the age of 16 in Tishomingo).

He enjoyed fishing, working in his pecan grove, garden and yard and working with his cattle.

He was a member of Main and Oklahoma Church of Christ in McAlester.

Survivors include his wife, Florence Tipps, of the home; his daughter, Jeneice Cable and husband, Lowell Jr. “Buddy”, of McAlester; his son, Charley Ray Tipps and wife, Ruthie Biron-Tipps, of Tulsa.

Also, five grandchildren, Brett Daniel Cable and wife, Amy, of McAlester, Amy (Tipps) Howard and husband, Tracy, of McAlester, Rebecca (Tipps) Miller and husband, Joe, of Mustang, Kendra Tipps, of Pryor, and Devon Chen and sister, JiaSing Chen, of McAlester.

And, seven great-grandchildren, Madeleine Cable, Joseph Nickel, Seth Tipps, Shawn Tipps, Joy Tipps, Nathan Graybill and Johnathan Tipps.

And, six sisters-in-law, Jean Tipps, of McAlester, Bell Perteet, of McAlester, Sue James and husband, Randy, Fort Worth, Texas, Carolyn Evans, Dallas, Texas, Mary Lou Evans, Booneville, Ark., and Bayara Evans, Odessa, Texas.

And, four brothers-in-law, Jay Evans, Fayetteville, Ark., John Evans and wife, Billie Sue, Fayetteville, Ark., Coy Evans and wife, Brenda, Booneville, Ark., and Paul David Evans and wife, Jackie, Odessa, Texas, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Mount Herman Tipps; his mother, Elsie Mae (Mannering) Tipps; his siblings, Elmer Leslie Tipps and wife, Sue, Louise (Tipps) Allford, Lola Ellen (Tipps) Howell and husband, Ray, Flora (Tipps) Shatley, and Lenora (Tipps) Sims and husband, Harold; brothers-in-law, Arthur, Luther, Pete and Everett Evans, and one special cousin, Harold Tipps.

Pallbearers will be Hank Evans, Steve Tipps, Buddy Cable, Brett Cable, Tracy Howard, Dennis Nickel and Joe Nickel.

Honorary pallbearers will be Thunder Creek golfers, James Vercelli, David Martin, Letha Brannon and Charley Akin.

    Alyce Yvonne Knight Lerblance was born on November 21, 1923, in Pittsburg, Oklahoma, to Fred C. and Letha Mae Knight.  She was the fourth of seven children born to Fred and Letha Knight.  Alyce grew up in Wilburton and graduated with the class of 1941 and was a graduate of Eastern State A & M in Wilburton.

She moved to Edmond, OK, two months ago in order to be closer to her sons and family members. Bette was born on the family farm near Washington, OK, on March 11, 1930.
