Norine Alice Thomas Jones

McALESTER — Norine Alice Thomas Jones, 96, of McAlester, died Sunday, Sept. 29, 2013, at Forest Hills Care Center in Broken Arrow.

Viewing will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at Bishop Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Bishop Chapel of Memories with Dr. Charles Neff officiating. The eulogy will be by Peggy McBeath. Burial will be at Memory Gardens Memorial Park Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Bishop Funeral Service of McAlester.

Born Sept. 2, 1917, in Seminole, she was the daughter of Ceicle Alta Morgan and Chester Arthur Thomas. She graduated from Seminole High School in 1934. She attended Seminole State College and East Central University. She received her bachelor of science and master’s degree in elementary education. She studied at the University of Oklahoma for supervision and curriculum development.

She began her teaching career in Kiowa, while teaching there she met and married Raphael Jones. They were married in Seminole on May 10, 1941.

She returned to Seminole while her husband was serving in the European Theatre of World War II.

She taught a combined 38 years at Seminole, Weatherford, Savanna, Stuart, Arpelar and McAlester schools.

In 1951, she started teaching in McAlester Public School system at Washington and Will Rogers. 

She was past president of Pittsburg County OEA, The Reading Council of the Southeast district and Kappa Kappa Iota Teacher’s Sorority. She was also a member of Delta Kappa Gamma teacher’s Sorority. She served as chairman of Public Relations of the PTA Council.

She was very active in the community of McAlester. She served as a mentor in the Hosts Program of McAlester Public Schools. She had served as secretary on the Alene Puterbaugh Memorial Center Board. She was a member and past director of the Literary Department of the McAlester Fortnightly Clubs.

She worked at her voting precinct in McAlester for 15 years. She assisted the Kappa Kappa Iota Alpha conclave in the reception for the GED Graduations. She was a past president of the Crepe Myrtle Garden Club.

As a young girl she belonged to the Order of Rainbows for Girls. She was a past worthy advisor and received the Grand Cross of Colors. In McAlester she was a member of the Faith Chapter of Eastern Star. She was a past matron and received her 50 year pin, in 1997. She was also member of the United Commercial Travelers No. 243 of McAlester.

She was an active member of Grand Avenue United Methodist Church since 1947. For many years, she was a Sunday school teacher and superintendent of the children’s department. She served the children on numerous boards including, The United Methodist Youth Counsel and The Oklahoma State Children’s Ministry department. She also served on administrative boards, the board of trustees and the finance and nominating committees. She chaired the worship and education committees. She served as an usher and hostess and was a member of the Fellowship Sunday School class for more than 50 years. She was also a member of the church choir and helped organize a bell choir.

She was also very active in the United Methodist Women, holding a number of offices including, president and vice chairman, treasurer, project chairman, membership chairman and scholarship chairman. She also served as treasurer and vice chairman of the Sarah Circle.

After retiring, she and her husband enjoyed traveling. They traveled in much of the United States, Canada and Mexico. They toured in Hawaii, Israel and Egypt.

Survivors include daughters, Celia Scherman and husband, William, of McAlester, and Elizabeth Parsons and husband, William, of Broken Arrow; grandchildren, Virginia Hart and husband, Jim, of Glenpool, and Tom Cinocca and wife, Misty, of Broken Arrow; great-grandchildren, Megan Hart, of Glenpool, Destyne Cinocca, of Broken Arrow, and Alec Cinocca, of Broken Arrow; special niece, Anne Schank and husband, Hank, of Oklahoma City; sister-in-law, Mellanie Shuman, of McAlester, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Raphael Wilson Jones; her parents: Chester Arthur Thomas and Ceicle Alta (Morgan) Thomas, and a brother, Lt. Col. J.T. Thomas.

Pallbearers will be Glen Jones, Jimmy Jones, Hank Schank, Jim Hart, Tom Cinocca and Allen Scherman.

She moved to Edmond, OK, two months ago in order to be closer to her sons and family members. Bette was born on the family farm near Washington, OK, on March 11, 1930.
