Eugene Harold Mattingly Jr.

McALESTER — Eugene Harold Mattingly Jr., 82, of Talihina Veterans Center, died Monday, Sept. 2, 2013, at Veterans Administration Medical Center in Oklahoma City.

Graveside services were Tuesday at Memory Gardens Memorial Park Cemetery in McAlester with Dru Waren officiating. Burial was at Memory Gardens Cemetery. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Brumley-Mills Funeral Home of McAlester.

Born Dec. 17, 1930, in Anthony, Kan., he was the son of Eugene Harold and Ruth McGuire Mattingly and he grew up in Wichita, Kan. He attended Wentworth Military Academy in Lexington, Mo. and Wichita University Kansas, where he pursued a degree in business administration before enlisting in the United States Army.

He distinguished himself by serving in the Airborne Special Forces in the Korean War and also served a tour of duty in Austria. He was awarded many honors, including two purple hearts.

After he was honorably discharged from the service, he managed a ski lodge outside Colorado Springs with his wife.

Becuase of his love for the outdoors, he moved to the Oregon coast where he earned his captain’s license and ran a deep sea charter fishing service.

Desiring to be closer to family, he accepted a sales position with Continental Chemical in Dodge City, Kan. and was later transferred to Rogers, Ark.

Upon retiring to Golden, Mo., he resumed his love of fishing on Table Rock Lake. Before becoming a resident of the Talihina Veterans Center, he resided in McAlester near his daughter, where he enjoyed spending time with family and building and flying remote control airplanes. He had a love of the outdoors, an engaging sense of humor and an appreciation of family and friends.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Terry and Michael Shupe, Lacey, Wash., and Kimberly and Marty House, of McAlester; grandchildren, Drew House, of McAlester, and Shelley Angel and husband, John, Tacoma, Wash.; great-grandchild, Hudson Angel, Tacoma, Wash.

Also, one brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Susan Mattingly, Fulton, Mo.; one sister and brother-in-law, Linda and Bob Schumaker, of Edmond, and nephews, Dr. David Schumaker and wife, Amy, Knoxville, Tenn., Scott Schumaker and wife, Jennifer, of Oklahoma City, and Eric Mattingly, Columbia, Mo..

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Barbara Schafer Mattingly, and grandparents, Edward  E. and Emma McGuire  and Paul and Anna Mattingly.

    Alyce Yvonne Knight Lerblance was born on November 21, 1923, in Pittsburg, Oklahoma, to Fred C. and Letha Mae Knight.  She was the fourth of seven children born to Fred and Letha Knight.  Alyce grew up in Wilburton and graduated with the class of 1941 and was a graduate of Eastern State A & M in Wilburton.

    Heaven opened its gates for Bette Jo Williams, 84, on Saturday, July 19, 2014, following a brief illness with pancreatic cancer. Bette lived in McAlester, OK, for 60 years. She moved to Edmond, OK, two months ago in order to be closer to her sons and family members. Bette was born on the family farm near Washington, OK, on March 11, 1930.
