Mickey Ray Harris

McALESTER — Mickey Ray Harris, 66, of McAlester, died Tuesday, March 25, 2014, in McAlester.

The family will receive visitors from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Chaney-Harkins Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Frink Baptist Church with Pastor Monty Thompson officiating. Burial will be at Carney Family Cemetery south of McAlester.  Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Chaney-Harkins Funeral Home of McAlester.

Born June 21, 1947, in Sonora, Texas, he was the son of Jefferson and Mae Harris.  He served in the United States Marine Corps and was a Vietnam veteran. He was the youngest marine to serve in Vietnam. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, National Defense Medal, two Silver Stars, Rifle and Pistol Sharpshooter, Presidential Citation and Presidential Unit Accommodation.

He enjoyed fishing, hunting, horseback riding, watching wrestling and NASCAR.  He was a member of the Masons, DeMolay leader and coached at the Boys and Girls Club.

He worked jobs from ranching to cross-country truck driving.

He attended Frink Baptist Church.

He was stationed at the U.S. Naval Ammunition Depot in McAlester, where he met and married Betty Joe Johnson on Dec. 31, 1969.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Joe Johnson Harris; one daughter, Deanna Harris and Paul Griffith; grandchildren, Michael Harris and wife, Madison, Shyann Hamilton, Brian Hamilton and Cody Maisano and Dana Wilcox; great-granddaughter, Olivia Marie; nephew and nieces, Freeman Reed, Karen Johnston and husband, Patrick, Phillip Reed and Tammie Baze; three brothers, Jeff Harris and wife, Donna, Walter Harris and wife, Eva, Scott Harris and wife, Lesley, and numerous other nieces, nephews, and special friends, Bill Milligan, Jaye Buffington, Samantha Stoneburner and the Hospice of McAlester staff.

He was preceded in death by parents, Jefferson and Mae Harris; in-laws, Joseph and Agnes Johnson; two nieces, Bobbie Reed and Janet Painter, and two nephews, Jeff S. Harris Jr. and Jeff Harris.

Pallbearers will be Bill Milligan, John Whetsel, Chan Lee, Dr. John Cotton, Will Milligan and John Lloyd Whetsel.

Honorary pallbearers will be Prevon Erving, Patrick Trammell, Lance Berry, Pete Meggs and Joe Mitchell.
