James “J.V.” Vernie Walker,

McALESTER — James “J.V.” Vernie Walker, 92, of Kiowa, died Saturday, March 22, 2014, at Coal County General Hospital in Coalgate.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Kiowa Methodist Church with the Rev. David Stanfield and Dr. the Rev. Bryan Pain officiating. Burial will be at Kiowa Cemetery. Funeral arrangements under the direction of Chaney-Harkins Funeral Home.

Born Dec. 28, 1921, in Pittsburg, he was the son of Lester Lee and Susie Adeline (Gaither) Walker. He joined the United States Army and served during World War II in France and Germany and worked as a technical sergeant and was honorably discharged Jan. 12, 1946.

He worked as a supervisor at U.S. Army Ammunition Plant until his retirement on Sept. 1, 1983.

He was a member of Kiowa Methodist Church.

He lived his life as a man with integrity and a wonderful sense of humor. He loved to tell stories of the local community and family history and he spent time singing old songs to grandchildren and family members.

Survivors include his son, Ronnie Walker and wife, Glenda, of McAlester; daughter, Carolyn Walker, of Kiowa; grandchildren, Shonda Walker-Pain and husband, Bryan, and Clint Allen Walker and wife, Corina; great-grandchildren, Raylee, Morgan, Isaac Pain, Caden and Kimber Walker, and numerous nieces, nephews, other family and friends.

Pallbearers will be Rick Parrott, Tell Jordan, Ken Doyle, Clint Walker, Jeremy Doyle and John Sydney Doyle.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Wayne Walker, Dr. John Cotton, Danny Patton, R.E. Hooe, Finis Mackey, Dale Mackey, Tina Jordan, James Simmons, Jim Doyle, Vernon Adams, Michael Kellogg and friends of Brass Rose.
