Walter ‘Pete’ Hammit

McALESTER — Walter “Pete” Hammit, 86, of McAlester, died Friday, March 14, 2014, at a local nursing center.

A celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the First Baptist Church of Krebs with the Rev. Ed Garrett will be officiating. Burial will follow at Savanna Cemetery.

Military honors will be provided by Robert B. Thomas Veterans of Forgien Wars, Post No. 1098

Arrangements are under the direction of Bishop Funeral Service.

He was born Aug. 24, 1927, in Wacca, Texas, to Walter Andrew “Pat” Hammit and Esther Leicht Hammit. He served in the United States Navy from 1945 until 1949. He returned to Texas, where he began farming in Dalhart. He moved to McAlester in 1976 and continued to farm. He enjoyed working with and training horses.

He was a member of First Baptist Church in Krebs. He attending many gospel singings where he and his wife, Muriel, would sing. He also played guitar at a number of local senior centers and nursing homes. He especially enjoyed his children and grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Lena Muriel Housley Hammit, of the home; daughters, Sharon Austin, of Amarillo, Texas, La Dean Stewart, of Dalhart, Texas, Diane Fry, of Krebs, and Charlene Smyrl, and husband, Gary, of Keller, Texas; sons, Walter Dudley Hammit, and wife, Vicki, of Dumas, Texas, and Gary Hammit, and wife, Debbie, of Fritch, Texas; 17 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren; and a brother,  Kenneth “Jim” Hammit, and wife, Barbara, of Fritch, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Sophia “Betty” Hammit; a son-in-law, Wayne Moore, and three sisters.

Active pallbearers will be his grandsons. Honorary pallbearers will be Jim Hammit, Brad Hammit, Brit Hammit, Gary Hammit, Ducky Hammit and Guy Payne.
